Rg Iii: Bryce Harper Could Help Me

Robert Griffin III: “I’m Not a Great Slider”

“Bryce, we can do that if you want to, buddy.” The Washington Nationals’ outfielder will have a little extra time on his hands after Major League Baseball’s regular season ends Sunday. But even he might not provide enough help in teaching Griffin how to do the one thing the coaches want him to do more of this season: slide. It was evident a year ago that Griffin struggled in this discipline. And he provided reminders against the Detroit Lions Sunday. After one zone read option run, Griffin tried to slide after gaining four yards.

Talking about raising a football star with RG3’s mom

That’s fine. And that’s just the way we choose to deal with it. Q: You were really fearful of Robert playing football when he was younger. What changed for you? Jackie Griffin: I didn’t like the concept of playing football and watching my son get hit just for fun. I really had a problem with that.

Robert Griffin III still doesn’t know how to slide

The Lions easily made the recovery. Even if he hadnt fumbled, it still would have been a terrible slide for RG3. He looked like the guy in the movies whos sprinting away from oncoming danger but cant keep his balance. (Or Eli Manning, who did the same thing in a loss three years ago.) Whats wrong with the casual slide on the rear? Elway did it! Young did it! Vick did it sometimes.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III sends racy texts to Hooters waitress on his wedding day: report

Griffin, who is a team captain, said on Sunday that he might have to ditch his preferred method of positive reinforcement and lead with a harder edge, but by Wednesday he had decided his speed could speak as loud as his words. We just need energy out there on the field, period, Griffin said. Especially on the road, the crowds not going to give you any energy, so I take it upon myself to be that guy. Ive never been a hype man, but Lil Johns a Redskins fan, and you can learn a little bit from him, so Ill be the hype man if they need me to be the hype man. Ill get everybody motivated.

Did newlywed Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III send an incriminating text on the day of his wedding? Hooters waitress and a Virginia Commonwealth University student Meredith Barber has offered up photo proof to bustedcoverage.com that Griffin allegedly sent her a series of racy messages, including some on the day he said “I do.” “Come on bae,” the QB reportedly wrote to Barber before sending a shirtless image of himself with his head cut off, along with a smiley icon. PHOTOS: CELEBRITY CHEATING SCANDALS http://www.bustedcoverage.com Merdith Barber a student at VCU who posted screengrabs of texts she says came from Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III on his wedding day. When Barber didn’t respond to his advances, he allegedly wrote, “Well ok I give up I guess. See you in a few weeks kid.” The texts were dated in the screen shot for July 6 in the early hours of RG III’s wedding day to longtime girlfriend Rebecca Liddicoat. A Twitter trail was detected by someone named Brandon K., who emailed Busted Coverage with the tip-off. Griffin’s groomsman William Mallow’s Twitter timeline allegedly showed activity with Barber on it, leading the source to dig back to Barber’s feed, where a tweet from the blond said,”I could show Becky this though.” Posted along with the statement was the screen shot from her cellphone of the alleged wedding day messages. Mallow reportedly wrote into the site, denying the reports. “We both know that Meredith is looking for attention/money.

Diddy’s vodka brand, which is to say wrapped in that Fuming Squirrel face Diddy makes when he’s trying to look serious. The bus smelled like infected hangover. No one wanted to touch what was either a pole for passengers to hang onto while the bus was in motion or a pole with… other uses. Despite all this, though, the mood was positive, insofar as every passenger I asked seemed confident that Washington would win its Wild Card game against Seattle, and that there was no telling what the team might do with Robert Griffin III under center.

Im not a great slider, Robert Griffin III admitted Wednesday, confessing to the obvious after he fumbled while trying to down himself head first in Sundays loss to the Detroit Lions . Griffin reiterated that coverage of the team shouldnt be about just one player, saying he wants his teammates to know he doesnt think the team is just about him while acknowledging that the quarterback will always receive a lot of the attention. But he keeps giving us excuses to write about him. RGIII said he has practiced sliding, in training camp. You basically run up to a defender and you slide, he explained. But its harder in shorts during practice than in the slicker football pants worj during a game, he said.

Robert Griffin III gets up

“I mean, if Bryce wants to do that I’m definitely up for that,” Griffintold reporters.”Bryce, we can do that if you want to, buddy.” The Nationals’ season ends Sunday. The point resonates that Griffin’s sliding could use some work. “The problem is I’m not a great slider, should I say,” Griffin said. “I know how to slide, but I don’t know how to baseball slide, and I think that’s what they’re talking about. But there is just more of an emphasis on sliding feet-first as opposed to going forward since that rule is in place. It protects you as a quarterback going backwards, going feet-first, so that’s what you’ve got to do, so just make a mental note of that and try to slide feet-first. “You basically run up to a defender and you slide. It’s easier to slide with football pants on. The slickness of the pants, I know I’m going a little too deep here, but the slickness of the pants helps you slide. When you have shorts on and stuff like that, it’s a little less conducive to sliding on the practice field, but I have.” Follow me on Twitter: @RavensInsider Aaron Wilson covers the Ravens for The Baltimore Sun.

The Redskins, after struggling mightily on both sides of the ball in the first two games, displayed improvements. But a first-half interception and a fourth-quarter fumble by Robert Griffin III both to kill potential scoring drives and a reversed touchdown call later in the final quarter all proved too much to overcome. Gallery The weeks best news photos Heres a quick way to catch up on the weeks news, through some of our favorite photos. With the loss, the Redskins fell to 0-3 to start the season for the first time since 2000 when the team opened the year with an 0-5 record. That Marty Schottenheimer-coached team rebounded to finish with an 8-8 record, but didnt advance to the postseason. And this Redskins team is now venturing dangerously close to a similar position with the meat of their schedule still very much ahead of them. Since Buffalo in 1998, no team has made the playoffs after opening the year with an 0-3 record.

The division has one victory against non-NFC East teams. Thats helpful. Maybe it lessens the SEC-of-the-NFL talk, but its helpful. Worst Trend:Observation: Washington teams that win division titles have not been starting their subsequent seasons particularly well in recent months. Best First Field Goal: John Potters first NFL field goal attempt came last week in Green Bay, and it did not inspire confidence. As I recall, it actually traveled parallel perpendicular to the line of scrimmage. His second NFL field goal attempt came on Sunday, and in a key situation, he hit from 43 yards, straight down the middle, with plenty of length. He hit a second field goal late in the game.

Redskins notes: London Fletcher takes a breather

Griffin hasn’t looked the same since tearing his ACL in the playoffs, and his slow starts have contributed to the team falling behind by a combined 64-7 in two losses. Last season’s Offensive Rookie of the Year has completed 11 of 24 passes for 160 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the first half, compared to 45 of 65 for 489 yards with five scores and one pick while playing catch-up in the second. However, a bigger concern has been Griffin not factoring in the ground game like he did last season when he was the Offensive Rookie of the Year. Griffin says that will change this week. “It’s not that I want to run more, I just feel like that’s what we need,” he said. “If that’s what it takes to win games, then I’m willing to do that.” After rushing for 815 yards and seven TDs last season, Griffin has been limited to 25 yards on nine carries as he tries to get more comfortable on that injured knee. He’s yet to run the ball out of the zone-read — the play that made him so difficult to defend a year ago.

Redskins add TE Davis to injury report for Sunday

— The Washington Redskins have added tight end Fred Davis to their injury report for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions . The Redskins announced Saturday that Davis is questionable with an ankle injury. Davis played sparingly in the second half of last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers , although coach Mike Shanahan says it was because of performance and not injury. Davis was not listed on the injury report Wednesday through Friday. Davis has three catches for 25 yards in the Redskins’ first two games.

They rotate running backs to keep them fresher so I decided to rotate the middle linebacker. Fletcher then flashed a smile. The veteran couldnt have enjoyed watching from the sidelines. He has now started 203 consecutive games and appeared in 243. That ties him with Bill Romanowski for the most by a defensive player since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger. So Fletcher is not one to cede playing time lightly. But after a couple of difficult weeks for the Redskins defense, he was also open to any idea that would help. Did it work at all?

They’ve allowed 422 yards after the catch. Opposing quarterbacks have a 135.4 rating. All are NFL-worsts by a considerable margin. Frustrated Washington Redskins Take On Detroit In Week 3

Skins rookie DBs David Amerson and Bacarri Rambo must play well for Washington to have a shot. The linebacking corps, specifically Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo, needs to have a strong game as well. The more pressure Stafford is under, the less accurate he gets, and the less effective the offense will be. On the other side of the ball, it really begins and ends with Mr. Griffin III. The word coming out of Redskins Park this week is that the coaches are planning on using more bootlegs and fakes against the Lions, perhaps a sign that RGIII is finally feeling comfortable enough to run the Skins high-energy attack from a year ago. Griffin also said in his weekly press conference that he is willing to run more if he feels its what the team needs him to do. If hes up to speed early, this may be the game where the offense takes flight.

Theres (tackling) dummies out there, you can do different things. Haslett also agreed that good tackling takes a certain mentality. After all, its a basic football skill, in the same category as throwing, catching and blocking. Tackling, thats something weve been doing since we were kids, cornerback DeAngelo Hall, so its about getting back to the fundamentals. Tackling isnt a hard thing to do. The tackles we missed (in the last game) were just routine tackles that weve got to make to be in this league. The Redskins are expecting Sundays opponent, the Detroit Lions, to copy the things that have worked so well for other teams.

Double Coverage: Lions at Redskins

The Eagles and Packers forced the Redskins into a lot of nickel looks, and they’re struggling to stop the run. Teams are also forcing the Redskins to prove they can tackle in space, and thus far theyve failed. They start two rookies in the secondary (assuming they open in nickel), and thats led to breakdowns in communication or technique. Corner David Amerson takes his eyes off his work at times. I like his talent, but hes still growing as a player. Safety Bacarri Rambo would not have started if they had a legitimate option at free safety. Hes made mistakes too. But at least they can improve. Im surprised how bad this group has played.

Shanahan sat RG3 during the 2013 NFL preseason in an effort to get him ready for the regular season. It seemed like the right move, considering that sitting the Redskins most valuable commodity would protect RG3 from further injury. Unfortunately, Washington has gotten off to a slow start, losing their first two games of the 2013 season. RG3 hasnt looked sharp, throwing off target passes to his receivers. In addition, the Redskins have inexplicably gotten away from the zone read offense that made them one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. Maybe Shanahan is concerned that RG3 isnt physically or mentally ready to run the zone read at this point. This isnt how things were supposed to go for the Redskins and their fans.

Washington Redskins’ defense is regressing, following attempts to fix what failed last year

Elsewhere, reckless safety Brandon Meriweather has somehow escaped suspension for his hit on Green Bay’s rookie runner Eddie Lacy . According to Mike Jones of The Washington Post , Meriweather will instead receive a fine for the helmet-to-helmet collision. Jones also reports that Meriweather’s status, following the concussion he suffered in the same game, won’t be known until Wednesday. Given the current state of their patchwork secondary, the Redskins can ill afford to lose any defensive backs. What might offer a reprieve for the defense is the recent injury sustained by Detroit running back Reggie Bush. He sustained a knee injury in Arizona. Head coach Jim Schwartz labelled tests on the knee as “encouraging,” according to Carlos Monarrez ofThe Detroit Free Press , but he would not confirm if Bush would be healthy enough for Week 3 action.

Heat rising in opposition to Redskins nickname

That is unheard of. That is a college number, the kind a strong FBS team puts up against a weak FCS team. The Redskins are playing two rookies in the secondary, cornerback David Amerson and free safety Bacarri Rambo, and they arent ready for the NFL. The Redskins run a 3-4 defense three down linemen and four linebackers and its not a good fit, even though the Redskins are in their fourth season of trying to find the right fit. The Redskins have given up 1,023 yards in their first two games. No one wins in the NFL with defense that porous. The solution is … well, thats a tough one. Against Philadelphia, the answer was to have cornerback DeAngelo Hall pick up a fumble the Eagles thought was an incomplete pass and jog 75 yards for a touchdown.

Washington Redskins: Benching Robert Griffin III Is Pure Insanity

Video The Post Sports Live crew offers bold predictions for Sunday’s game versus the Detroit Lions. The 1,023 yards surrendered by Washington has the team on pace to shatter single-season record of 7,042 yards (440.1 per game), set last season by the New Orleans Saints , by more than 1,000 yards. Thats far from the picture Redskins officials and players envisioned as they brought back 10 of the 11 starters from last year and also banked on the healthy returns of outside linebacker Brian Orakpo and strong safety Brandon Meriweather to help build on last seasons second-half success. The expected big plays and strong stands out of the unit? Nonexistent. Instead, gaping holes up front, missed tackles and blown pass coverages are common. Meanwhile, the Redskins find themselves grasping for answers.

Relatives of Redskins WR Josh Morgan avoid Navy Yard shooting

That is something that is important to the Redskins fans,” Goodell told a radio sports talk show in Washington last week. “I think what we have to do is listen. “If one person is offended, then we have to listen. Ultimately it is Dan’s decision but it is something I want all of us to go out and make sure we are listening to our fans, listening to people that have a different view,” added Goodell, who earlier this year voiced support for the Redskins name. ‘NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES’ Many U.S. professional sports teams still carry Indian names, logos or mascots including the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves, the National Basketball Association’s Golden State Warriors and the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks. Brandon Stevens, an Oneida Nation official, said Native Americans find the association offensive.

Redskins get a painful dose of regular season reality

— The problem isnt that the Washington Redskins have been issued 17 penalties. Its that when theyre not doing anything else right, those penalties become magnified. Washington committed seven penalties for 78 yards in Sundays 38-20 loss to the Packers. The Redskins do not lead the NFL in penalties, though only four teams have been issued more. And its not as if penalties equal bad teams, especially when you consider those ahead of Washington are Detroit (19), Denver (21), Seattle (19) and San Francisco (23). The last three teams are considered Super Bowl contenders. You always want to be disciplined, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. A lot of times a team plays extremely hard and you have unnecessary penalties because of aggression. You want to keep your poise.

Penalties hurting Washington

Much of it is welcome and long overdue as clubs and the decent majority of supporters unite to claim back their stadiums from the bigots and racists who shame their colours. Other positive examples of PC-driven progress can be seen in the raised profile of womens sport. But one story from America that caught my eye this week raises the question of where the line is to be drawn? At what point does the PC bandwagon veer off its righteous path and rumble off like a runaway train, destroying the traditions sports fans hold so dear? The Washington Redskins are a famous sporting institution not just in the USA but across the world. Yet this global giant is under serious pressure to change its name because the term Redskin is offensive to the Native American community. It wasnt always so. The term was first used by Native Americans to distinguish themselves from the European settlers who stole their lands.

Let him play through his struggles in an effort to lead his team. Benching him could shatter his confidence and stunt his progress as an NFL quarterback. Washington is trying to capitalize on RG3s abilities as a pocket passer, considering that he has a strong arm and the awareness to thrive in the pocket. This is a sharp contrast from the zone read offense that focused on the dual threat of RG3s running and passing, aswell asrunning back Alfred Morris.Switching to a more traditional offense has turned RG3and the Redskins offense into shells of the prolific unit from last season. Its possible that this transformationindicates that the quarterback isnt fullyhealed, physically or mentally, from his torn right ACL injury.

Sports Done Drexel Perry September 13, 2013 10:59 AM COMMENTARY | If Adrian Peterson ‘s superhuman 2012 comeback from an ACL repair is any indication, Robert Griffin III ‘s slow start and improved finish in the season-opener should serve as a positive omen of good things to come for the Washington Redskins . Many expected a dazzling display of fireworks from RG III in his highly-anticipated Week 1 comeback from ACL surgery. Unfortunately, the only explosives witnessed that night were the bombs that detonated from Chip Kelly’s Philadelphia Eagles high octane offense in their 33-27 victory over the Washington Redskins. Griffin started off slowly, but ended the night with a respectable stat line as he completed 30 of his 49 passes for 329 yards, including two touchdown tosses. Lost amid the hoopla surrounding Peterson’s 2012 Herculean comeback from a torn ACL was its humble beginnings. The end result was outstanding; 2,097 rushing yards, recipient of the Most Valuable Player award and for the icing on the cake, a playoff appearance. However, the path that ensued to Peterson’s greatness last season was anything but great at the start. Similar to Griffin’s 2013 preseason, Peterson experienced his own version of “Operation Patience” during the 2012 preseason.

Robert Griffin III: ‘There is no conflict’ with Mike Shanahan

That’s why I have the confidence to know I’ll be ready to go and it’ll be smooth sailing.” Gil Brandt, a former longtime Dallas Cowboys personnel director, has seen a lot of ACL comebacks over the years including Griffin’s first. “It used to be that when guys would come back, they would be tentative,” Brandt told USA TODAY Sports. “But I don’t know if he knows what the word ‘tentative’ is. And when he came back at Baylor, he played like he was never hurt.” Griffin knows the conventional thinking. “Everyone is anticipating that I’ll be rusty,” he said. “But that’s not the way I think, and that’s just not how I’m built to think.” Still, the risk is so pronounced. His improvement which includes the natural progression for a quarterback in knowing his offense and deciphering defenses better is intertwined with staying intact physically.

Bell: Robert Griffin III predicts ‘smooth sailing’ in return

1. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

The Washington Redskins quarterback threw two interceptions and, at least until it was too late, too rarely resembled the electrifying player who was last seasons NFL offensive rookie of the year. The Redskins fell behind by 26 points this link and couldnt overcome their early stumbling and bumbling in a 33-27 season-opening defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles . Throws sailed wide of receivers or landed in the arms of Eagles defenders as Griffin, for most of the night, looked exactly like what he was a quarterback who missed all of his teams offseason practices, participated in only portions of training camp and didnt play in the preseason. He found little room to run when he scrambled out of the pocket. By the time he settled into something approaching a groove during the fourth quarter, in which he threw a pair of touchdown passes to wide receiver Leonard Hankerson , the outcome basically had been decided. Griffin piled up some cosmetic passing numbers late and ended up connecting on 30 of 49 throws for a career-high 329 yards. He finished with 24 rushing yards on five carries.

Robert Griffin III makes grand entrance on Monday Night Football

Although the Redskins lost to the St. Louis Rams, Griffin was effective again both passing and running. Griffins teammates noticed a trend developing. Hes playing his first two games on the road and hes completely poised, fullback Darrel Young said. Hes doing everything like we were just in practice. You could tell he wasnt going to be overwhelmed by anything. And just the way we were able to silence crowds so fast . .

Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins lose opener to Philadelphia Eagles

His first performance back on a football field went much like youd expect for someone who spent the last eight months recovering from reconstructive Robert Griffin III Jersey knee surgery and missing every preseason game. A couple of poor decisions early on resulted in interceptions, both showing the rust many imagined they would see from the quarterback. Poor decision-making and mechanical issues were to be expected. It was his first live game action since January, after all. And while it wasnt pretty, Griffin did get a chance to boost his confidence after his team was overwhelmed quickly by a 33-7 deficit. Chip Kellys offense relented, and Griffin salvaged his evening by bringing his team back, just falling short of leading a heroic comeback win. This week, he has a chance to get off to a better start against another defense susceptible to being beat down the field. The Green Bay Packers D is an opportunistic unit that swarms the line of scrimmage and takes chances in its secondary. Stopping Griffin on the ground will likely be their main mission, while making him prove he can beat them through the air. Mobile quarterback Colin Kaepernick , who torched the Pack in the playoffs for 181 yards rushing last season, accepted the challenge and went to the air often and successfully in Week 1.

Robert Griffin III has issues in Washington Redskins opener

Im kidding. It was totally over-the-top. Dare I say Ray-Lewis-esque. With Metallicas Enter Sandman blaring, Griffin III came out and dropped to his knees, pointed to the sky, then started banging the ground with both hands. Then someone handed him a flag, and he went out as the crowd in Landover, Maryland went bonkers. This is RGIIIs world, and were just living in it. (Thanks to @BuzzfeedSports for the GIFs)

If I make a bad throw coming off an injury, its my mechanics, and Im not driving off my back leg, he said. But if a healthy quarterback makes a bad throw, its just a bad throw. I understand that. Theres just stuff that you have to not look at. You know when your technique is sound, and you know what you have to do if you make a bad throw. You fix those things in practice, you fix them in the game, and thats what were going to do. Griffin and his coach, Mike Shanahan, have cited the teams second-half performance as an indication the Redskins found their groove.

I’m the player. Coach has a plan and I’m abiding by that plan. I’m doing everything the coaches are asking me to do. I trust those guys. They want me to have a long career and that’s what part of this plan is about. What’s RG3 thinking? “[Monday], I voiced my opinion about it because I was asked about it. That’s been twisted and turned and tried to put against this team and that’s not what we want.

Ryan Kerrigan, Chip Kelly Meet Again

Ryan Kerrigan gets back to work

Were all in good shape, but where they have success with their offense is theyve got good personnel and they dont allow guys to get lined up so guys on film youll see, are kind of second guessing themselves sometimes. Kerrigan admitted last week that playing against unusual offensive formations can play tricks on a defenders mind, but if the Redskins struggle against the Eagles offense on Monday it wont be due to a lack of preparation. Were playing fast and were not just allowing them to completely dictate the tempo, Kerrigan said of how practice for Eagles week has gone so far. But were still attacking and were still aggressive. While Kerrigan has been a terror to every NFL team during the first 32 games of his career, hes especially been a thorn in Phillys side. In four career games against the division foe hes recorded 15 tackles, three sacks and countless sleepless nights for Eagles brass. His most notably play against them came on a 3rd and 15 deep inside Redskins territory. Had Kerrigan not made the strip who knows how the rest of the game would have turned out and the season for that matter. While its difficult to pinpoint one exact play in a game that saw over 125 as the play that won the Redskins the game, theres no denying the fact that it stopped an Eagles drive that appeared destined for the end zone.

Ryan Kerrigan Has The Key To Victory For Redskins Vs. Giants

Their size and athleticism creates nightmare matchups for defense, but Kerrigan (6-4, 260) is determined to improve on last years game against Gronkowski , in which the Patriots star had a season-high 160-receiving yards and two touchdowns on six receptions. You want to be physical at the line because he is a taller guy, Kerrigan said of Graham . You dont want to let him off the line because once he does, he gets out in the open, and when the ball is up in the air, nine times out of 10 hes going to come down with it. The Saints of course, try to counter any physicality against Graham by where they position him on the field. Hes usually inside but they split him out a lot because, a receiving threat like that with his height, you want him down the middle of the field exposing matchups, Kerrigan said. Hes probably faster Robert Griffin III Jersey than a lot of linebackers, bigger than a lot of DBs, definitely a guy that they try to exploit. Overall, Kerrigan is more confident about his coverage ability this season because of his familiarity with his responsibilities. Last year was his first season transitioning from defensive end, so coverage concepts took some getting used to. You just look on film from last year to this year, and last year Im just shaking my head, like, What was I doing, Kerrigan said. I know this year what Im supposed to do and how Im supposed to be doing it.

Washington Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan gets closer to his fans

He had an interception for a touchdown in his debut. What made him so good so quickly? Have you seen him? backup outside linebacker Darryl Tapp said, casting a glance in Kerrigan s direction. The man is like 6-4, 260. He can run with the running backs, he can tail off and cover wide receivers. He can rush the passer. Theres not too many things he cant do. He keeps working. He never comes to work thinking he knows it all. Hes a special player. Many things go into building staying power.

REDSKINS 2013: Ryan Kerrigan a mainstay after two NFL seasons

“Got a few new Twitter followers out of it,” Kerrigan said in a phone interview Friday. “And my friends have definitely told me every time they’ve seen it on the Top 10 plays, so that’s exciting.” [+] Enlarge AP Photo/Cliff Owen Ryan Kerrigan said that he feels he can be a focal point in the Redskins’ 3-4 defensive scheme. Kerrigan said he’d dreamed, of course, about scoring an NFL touchdown. But since he never found the end zone as a collegiate defensive end at Purdue, it seemed inconceivable that he’d do it in his first game. For a guy making the sometimes difficult transition from end to linebacker with only a month’s worth of NFL practices before the regular season began, it was a thrilling moment. It didn’t mean he’d solved anything, though. The Redskins’ 3-4 defense is suited to take immediate advantage of Kerrigan’s raw skills as a pass-rusher, and playing outside linebacker opposite Brian Orakpo puts Kerrigan in position to pile up sacks and big plays. But there’s more to the position than that, as Kerrigan saw when he hit the film room. “Certainly I’d like to play tighter coverage in the passing game,” Kerrigan said.

Ryan Kerrigan could save Redskins’ defense

But the young superstar has failed to dominate a game from start-to-finish this season. Kerrigan will need to have a DeMarcus Ware like day, and finally look like a player who will be one of the leagues top pass rushers, if Washington is to seize first place this weekend. Kerrigan will be going to battle against ex-Redskin Sean Locklear. Locklear was a disaster with Washington last season, but has started at right tackle for New York this year and has not given up a sack. It will be up to Ryan Kerrigan to bring back the old Sean Locklear and to help display Locklears many weaknesses that he put on film while here in Washington. That may seem like a tall order given that Locklear has not yielded a sack, but Locklear has allowed Eli to be hurried 11 times. And that might be answer for Washington, Theyve been doing a great job. Three games without a sack and I think the fourth game they had one sack. Eli [Manning] is doing a great job getting rid of the ball. If you cant get to him, you have to put some pressure on him because hes so accurate and hes going to come up with big plays.

Ryan Kerrigan gauging clash with Jimmy Graham

Lorenzo was a big help. Just being able to ask him about different situations was important for me. Rak is always helping me out. Then when you have good coaching along the way, too, it makes everything a lot easier. But Ive also worked really hard. Kerrigan brings a hard-hat-and-lunch-pail mentality to whatever he does. He applies himself as much in film study as he does in the weight room. It shows in Kerrigans ability to identify plays as they develop. On his interception against Pittsburgh, Kerrigan noticed Roethlisberger locked in on running back Jonathan Dwyer, who ran a swing route out of the backfield. After he recognized the pattern, Kerrigan broke off his rush on Roethlisberger and moved into position in coverage. Right place, right time touchdown.

Ryan Kerrigan’s increasing impact for the Redskins is no fluke

Jenkins bull rushed the right tackle into the backfield, and Kerrigan got past the guard with a blend of quickness and strength and found himself in the perfect position to wrap Locker up for the sack. The play served as a sign of things to come for the Redskins, who in practice have worked on that formation, and other similar looks with Kerrigan as a down lineman while Orakpo and Jenkins rush from the edges. I really like it, Kerrigan said. Its definitely a change of pace, both for myself, and for the guards and centers that Im going against, because theyre used to bigger and stronger guys. Im kind of lighter, and quicker than a lot of the guys they face, so its a nice change of a pace and a chance for me to put my hand in the dirt again. Blitzing out of a three-point stance is nothing new for Kerrigan, who played as a defensive end in a 4-3 front while at Purdue. Drafted by Washington 16thoverall and converted to a linebacker asked to blitz out of a two-point stance, Kerrigan made a relatively smooth transition and last season reached his first Pro Bowl after recording 8.5 sacks.

Answer: Yes. Ryan Kerrigan, future husband, please. That called for a follow-up question. That Kerrigan guy, youre kind of smitten with him? Kerrigan asked. What would you say to him if you happen to run into him today? Danielle, who didnt give her last name, said she would, Tell him I love him. To which Kerrigan replied, I love you, too. A second later, Danielle recognized the 6-foot-4, 260-pound man with the microphone. And, as they say in show biz, she lost it. Nuptials, however, are not pending. Kerrigan, who will be 25 on Aug.

Washington Redskins v New Orleans Saints

That strong finish helped lead the Redskins to the NFC East title, one of many things well be talking about when Kerrigan visits Pro Football Talk on NBCSN on Tuesday afternoon. Which 2012 playoff contestants are destined for the dustbin this time and which teams will replace them? Well share our thoughts during the show. It all gets started at 5:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

Ryan Kerrigan takes on new role in certain pass-rushing packages

But what jumps out when you watch him is that he makes good decisions. Sometimes, instead of overpursuing, he’ll hold back and bat down a pass, or wrestle a running back to the ground. The Redskins’ defensive scheme sometimes asks Kerrigan to play in coverage, which is an area of his game that doesn’t come naturally but has improved since his arrival. Basically, as simple as it sounds, the Redskins want Kerrigan to create chaos in his portion of the field. Even with all of the injuries, there remain quite a few very good players on the Redskins’ front seven.

Brian Orakpo, Fred Davis Are Bright Spots In Redskins’ Preseason Opener

But so too — Fred Davis Roy — junior and Brian Orakpo who told me unlike last year when he had some concerns about his surgically repaired pectoral muscle. He’s a 100% confident in it now. All three of those players are expect played big roles in 2013. But they’re still one major question mark that strong safety Brandon meriwether. He’s been slow to come back from ACL surgery and now he’s battling a tight groin muscle. He didn’t practice on Monday Tuesday was a player’s day off. And on Wednesday coach Mike Shanahan refused to give an update on his status makes you wonder doesn’t it.

The pass-rushing linebacker — coming off a season-ending torn pectoral muscle suffered in Week 2 last season — hopes to share something else with quarterback Robert Griffin 3, besides all those grueling hours spent rehabbing this offseason. “If we can both get Comeback Player of the Year honors, that would be remarkable, that would mean we did something special as a team,” Orakpo told USA TODAY Sports after Thursday’s practice. “Me and Griff worked extremely hard to not let our fans and this team down, because we know how much they rely on both of us. “If we come back at full strength like I know we both will, we’re going to be a team to be reckoned with.” RGIII: Says he’ll be ready for camp ‘without a doubt’ A share of Comeback Player of the Year honors is not the only individual goal Orakpo is chasing. “Defensive Player of the Year is a goal of mine,” Orakpo said. “I worked extremely hard this offseason and Defensive Player of the Year is very obtainable.” Griffin said all that hard work is showing for the linebacker who counts 28.5 sacks during his first three healthy seasons. “Rak’s been great,” Griffin said.

Redskins’ Brian Orakpo not concerned about thigh injury

Just stuff, you get nicked up in camp, so just precaution. Youve got to be smart, Orakpo said. Im not sure what the staff wants, but well figure it out. Its a day-to-day process with this. I had a knee to the quad, so once it calms down, well see where were at. Orakpo suffered the injury while trying to defend a running play in Thursdays practice. Guard Adam Gettis inadvertently kneed the linebacker in the right quad. Orakpo watched Fridays practice, and spent much of it riding the stationary bike at the edge of the field. He jogged off the field following the final huddle break and to the locker room. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said that Orakpo hasnt yet been ruled out for Mondays preseason game against Pittsburgh.

Being able to come back and make plays felt really good. Davis had two catches for 14 yards, including his three-yard touchdown on the Redskins second offensive series. The touchdown came on a second-down play on which Cousins faked to his left toward tailback Roy Helu Jr., then rolled to his right and threw a pass to Davis in the back of the end zone. Davis made the grab, but also was given a 15-yard penalty for falling to the ground as part of his touchdown celebration. Said Cousins: Fred certainly is a talent and a guy whos played a lot of football here. We love seeing him show up there in the stat line with a touchdown catch. It was the sort of confidence builder for Davis for which he and the Redskins had hoped. The Redskins lost one of their most reliable receivers last season when Davis suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. It was far from certain that Davis would be back with the team this season, given that he was a free agent in the offseason and drew interest from the Buffalo Bills and other teams. But Davis re-signed with the Redskins, and has seemed to be running well on the training-camp practice field.

Brian Orakpo’s recovery overshadowed but no less crucial for Redskins

”You’re always hoping that it’s healed the right way,” said Washington coach Mike Shanahan. ”So far, he looks very good. The strength is there. . If you can’t put pressure on the quarterback, the chances of you being a top five defense aren’t very good.” Redskins at a glance Looking for more dirt on the Redskins? Last year, once Orakpo went down, the Redskins found out they had quite the playmaker in reserve outside linebacker Rob Jackson , who came off the bench to start 14 games, turning in 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown. But in March the NFL suspended Jackson for the first four games of this season after he tested positive for a banned substance, underlining all the more how much the Redskins need Orakapo back in the lineup and producing. “He’s what you call a difference-maker,” veteran Washington inside linebacker London Fletcher said of Orakpo. “He can make some of the other players better, where you’re able to pressure the quarterback, get sacks on the quarterback. And also from a gameplan standpoint, the offensive coordinators have to account for him, so he’s going to help other guys play better football.” The injured Orakpo missed out on the Redskins’ season-ending seven-game winning streak and first NFC East title since 1999, and it was like doing plenty to help plan the party, but then missing out on all the fun.
