Ryan Kerrigan: The Best Defensive Playmaker You’ve Never Heard Of

Ryan Kerrigan’s increasing impact for the Redskins is no fluke

J. Watt, is also that type of player. Watt has turned into a disruptive force that opposing offenses must account for, evidenced by his NFL-leading 20.5 sacks. As a result, Watt was named 2012 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Washington Redskins left outside linebackerRyan Kerrigan(above)doesnt garner the same attention that Reed and Watt have. However, he has quietly turned into a solid defensive force for Washington. Selected in the first round by the Redskins in 2011, Kerrigan has already recorded 16 sacks. He also has two career interceptions, returning them both for touchdowns. Yes, its only a two-year sample size.

Purdue’s Ryan Kerrigan is college football’s best-kept secret

Fortunately for Kerrigan and the Redskins, hes a quick study. From the moment the teams No. 1 draft choice in 2011 arrived at Redskins Park, Kerrigan has been known for three things: work ethic, intelligence and inquisitiveness. Former Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander once told me that Kerrigan asks more astute questions in a day than some players come up with in a season. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett expects Kerrigan to contribute good ideas to whatever topic is being discussed. Kerrigan is always thinking about what comes next. Combined with his interest in film study, Kerrigan is an outstanding student who has learned well from his teachers. Ive had a lot of good people around me, Kerrigan said the other day. Lorenzo was a big help.

Washington Redskins v New Orleans Saints

“He certainly wasn’t a cheerleader type,” said Hope, “but when Ryan needed to get their attention, he spoke up. The rest of the time he led by example.” Purdue’s promising start didn’t last, as the defense surrendered 37 points per contest during an 0-6 finish. It was a return to normalcy for the Boilermakers, who have gone just 13-23 (8-16 Big Ten) since Kerrigan’s sophomore season. That record has relegated Kerrigan to a spectator during bowl season, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be resting this December. He plans to watch game film, increase his lifting regimen and complete cardio exercises to better position himself for the NFL combine in the spring. He’s looking to improve his draft stock, though many analysts already have him projected as a mid-to-late first round pick. “I’ll work on my flexibility a lot, especially in my hips,” Kerrigan said. “I’ll also work on incorporating more pass rush moves into my repertoire.” He’ll also work on making a name for himself, something that was increasingly difficult at Purdue. Kerrigan’s anonymity stems from his team’s sustained mediocrity, and despite his staggering statistics he was omitted from consideration for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy, the Chuck Bednarik Award and even the Rotary Lombardi Award.

Ryan Kerrigan could save Redskins’ defense

(John McDonnell/Washington Post) RICHMOND Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett always says a defense can never have too many pass rushers. Soon after the team drafted Florida States Brandon Jenkins this past offseason, Halsett said he planned to contrive a way to get the rookie on the field with starting outside linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan at the same time. Haslett unveiled his plan last Thursday night, early in the Redskins first preseason game. The coach dialed up a formation that featured Orakpo at his usual right outside linebacker spot, Jenkins in Kerrigans left outside linebacker spot, and Kerrigan lined up almost in the place of a defensive tackle on the left side of the line, opposite Tennessees right guard. The package yielded the anticipated result. Orakpo came off the edge and caused Titans quarterback Jake Locker to scoot to his right.

That strong finish helped lead the Redskins to the NFC East title, one of many things well be talking about when Kerrigan visits Pro Football Talk on NBCSN on Tuesday afternoon. Well find out how it feels to have linebacker Brian Orakpo back in the lineup after a torn pectoral muscle wiped out his 2012 campaign and whether Kerrigan thinks the team can be even better this year. Well also continuing our look at some of the storylines for the coming season when we tackle turnover in the playoff ranks. Which 2012 playoff contestants are destined for the dustbin this time and which teams will replace them? Well share our thoughts during the show.

Ryan Kerrigan Pick 6: Redskins LB Intercepts Ben Roethlisberger, Scores Touchdown (VIDEO)

What would you say to him if you happen to run into him today? Danielle, who didnt give her last name, said she would, Tell him I love him. To which Kerrigan replied, I love you, too. A second later, Danielle recognized the 6-foot-4, 260-pound man with the microphone. And, as they say in show biz, she lost it. Nuptials, however, are not pending. Kerrigan, who will be 25 on Aug. 16, handled himself with aplomb and an understated comedic tone. And, he came in ahead of quarterback Robert Griffin III, everyones heartthrob on the Redskins, as a potential husband. Thats a shocker in itself, Kerrigan said. Well, Griffin did get married this summer, which might have taken him off Danielles list.

Sometimes, instead of overpursuing, he’ll hold back and bat down a pass, or wrestle a running back to the ground. The Redskins’ defensive scheme sometimes asks Kerrigan to play in coverage, which is an area of his game that doesn’t come naturally but has improved since his arrival. Basically, as simple as it sounds, the Redskins want Kerrigan to create chaos in his portion of the field. Even with all of the injuries, there remain quite a few very good players on the Redskins’ front seven. London Fletcher , Perry Riley , Stephen Bowen and Barry Cofield are a few of the guys who have played well this year, and they all benefit from Kerrigan’s play-to-play ability to win his matchups and disrupt the offense.
