Washington Redskins top 5 headlines going into the 2013 season- #5 Cornerbacks

Redskins Welcome Military Members at Training Camp

Amerson saw playing time in 9 games as a true freshman in college and has steadily progressed into, what many believe, to be a true contender for a starting position in the NFL. Joining him is 511 Richard Crawford and 60 Chase Minnifield. Minnifield joined the Redskins practice squad in 2012 after suffering a season-ending knee injury in 2011 at the University of Virginia which required microfracture surgery. However on the last day of the offseason practices the Kentucky native tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which rendered him unable to play for the duration of the 2012 season. Since then he has rejoined the team for the 2013 practices, eager to show what he can do.

Washington Redskins Should Start Two Rookies in Secondary

A talk show that never ends Tracee Hamilton Everyone has something to say about Robert Griffin IIIs rehab, but were still awaiting the final word. Complete coverage Redskins players say they expect defensive coordinator Jim Haslett to unveil additional pass-rushing packages for the regular season that will keep quarterbacks from being too comfortable in the pocket. There is more than one way to try to fix a pass defense that ranked 30th in the league last season, and getting to the quarterback far more consistently is part of the Redskins formula for improvement in that area. Were gonna be a lot better this year, a lot better, Orakpo said. Were not going to really need to blitz as much. Were gonna keep it if were able to get pressure with four guys, were gonna keep it that way year-long. Weve got a lot of different packages that we havent even [shown]. Were just very, very basic, very vanilla right now. .

Washington Redskins’ Latest Injury News Extremely Devastating

TROUBLE FOR BILLS: Concussion-like symptoms for Kolb “If there are no setbacks, (Andrews) will OK him,” Shanahan said. “But I can’t say that for sure. Dr. Andrews will make that call. (Griffin has) had a good week of preparation in a lot of (first) team situations offense vs. defense. He got a lot of reps this week a majority of the reps.

Redskins vs. Bills: What to watch

There was plenty to see as the offensive and defensive players were running scrimmages on two fields and the troops were given exclusive access to both areas. Pfc. Ryan Steward, also of the 54th QM Co., said the V.I.P. treatment was memorable and much appreciated. “It was fun,” said the Lincolnton, N.C. native. “I met a lot of nice people. The atmosphere here is great, especially for a Redskins fan who is getting a chance to watch a training camp.

Mike Shanahan: Super Bowl Or Bust For Redskins

Needless to say, Washingtons depth on defense willhave to somehow come together and form a solid unit for the Redskins to remain competitive in 2013. The ongoing quest to form that solid defensive unitmay have to wait. Thats becauseWashingtons defense received some more bad news: reserve cornerbackRichard Crawford(above left, tackling Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiverDerek Moye)suffered a season-ending torn LCL ligament in hisleft knee during the Redskins third preseason game against the Buffalo Bills . This is a devastating blow, because Crawford was not only the Redskins nickel cornerback, he was also their starting punt returner. Crawfords loss could be looked at as a deathblow to the secondary, or an opportunity for veteran cornerbacksE.J. BiggersandChase Minnifieldto step up and claim that nickel cornerback spot. Crawfords punt returns duties will be harder to replace. Rookie running backChris Thompsonreturned punts against the Bills in Crawfords place. Unless the Redskins add an efficient punt returnerduring the preseason,it appears that Thompson will be responsible for Washingtons punt return duties in 2013.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen: ‘We’re in the SEC of the NFL’

We have a team that youre going to be proud of, Shanahan told reporters They have set the expectations: anything short of a Super Bowl is a failure. Shanahan expressed confidence in owner Daniel Snyder, and the personnel department, coaching staff and players. Coaches coach, players play and together all of us can win championships, Shanahan said. “And thats what we plan to do. Second-round draft pick David Amerson has had several impressive moments this preseason

So it matters. But based on performance Thompson still needs to prove he belongs. I like Jawan Jamison s running style, but the same applies to him. Royster is an average runner, so hes no lock. Keiland Williams is a good special-teams player, but not much help from scrimmage. Veteran backups.

Another positive step for RG3 prior to Redskins-Bills

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (24) leaps towards the end zone prior to scoring a touchdown in the first quarter against the Arizona Cardinals during a preseason game at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Instead, Washington ripped off seven straight wins and made the playoffs for the first time since 2007. There’s so many changes in the playoff teams each year — I think half of them change each year anyway, Allen said during a recent interview ESPN 980 (via the Washington Post ). And in our division, you know, we’re in the SEC of the NFL. This is the big leagues. I think when the Giants last won the Super Bowl, they won it with a 9-7 record. So we have to keep competing in our division, and that’s what our focus is.

Redskins get creative with pass rush in an attempt to fix inconsistent defense

Still, naming Amerson and Rambo opening day starters is just what the Redskins need. The current NFL trend is to start rookies immediately in the hope that they catch on fast. Simply put, it would be best for Washington to throw the rookies in the proverbial deep end of the pool and hope they swim instead of sink. Theres no shame in Amerson and Rambo being picked apart by Kaepernick, Ryan, Rodgers or Manning during the regular season. Those elite quarterbacks have picked apart many defenses in their respective careers. Therefore, its expected that Amerson and Rambo will go through some growing pains as regular season starters. Starting the two would be a far cry from previous Redskins regimes that built their roster via trades and free agent signings that were less-than-stellar transactions. If Amerson and Rambo prove to be capable rookie starters, though, Washington may have half of their starting secondary for the next 10 years. If not, the Redskins might trade them in a few years in exchange for low draft picks.
