Three Things to Watch When the Buffalo Bills Take on the Washington Redskins
Griffin seemed to think last year those Superman socks hes fond of wearing actually made him a man of steel. He took too many chances. After taking on a linebacker and suffering a concussion in Week 5 against Atlanta, Griffin said he needed to play it safer. Unfortunately for Griffin and the Redskins, Griffin didnt listen to his own advice. Instead of running out of bounds on a scramble in Week 14 against Baltimore, Griffin cut back into the middle of the field and gained more yards. He also got clobbered by Ravens defensive lineman Haloti Ngata and suffered his initial knee injury, which became worse in the playoffs. In fact, the hardest hits Griffin absorbed occurred on scrambles. Griffin isnt naive.
Redskins defense: What we’ve learned
“The Bears have some formidable linebackers…theyve got Lance Briggs. So we hand the ball off to Alfred [Morris] and he goes out there and runs over Lance Briggs. He runs him over, fixes his helmet, and keeps running. I knew for sure that ‘OK, if this guy gets a shot, hes going to be something special.'” And special he was. Morris finished his rookie NFL season second in rushing yards (1,613), second in rushing touchdowns (13) and third in rushing attempts (335).
The read-option leaves Griffin open to taking hits, and hits lead to injuries, and well, no one wants to see Griffin injured again, especially Mike and Kyle Shanahan. The Redskins have the perfect player to take some heat off of Griffin in the form of running back Alfred Morris . Morris is durable — he carried the ball 335 times last season — and he’s productive. The 24-year-old ran for 1,613 yards last season, second in the league, behind only Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson . The best news for the Redskins comes on the offensive line where all five starters return. Right guard Chris Chester , right tackle Polumbus, left tackle Trent Williams , left guard Lichtensteiger and center Will Montgomery led a unit that helped Washington rank first overall in rushing and fifth overall in total offense. The Redskins receiving corps wasn’t exactly a strength last season, but that could change in 2013. If Pierre Garcon can make it through an entire year unscathed, that would give Griffin another weapon.
Lateef Brock, 8, Plays With the Washington Redskins
He led the Florida Gators to the 2000 Southeastern Conference Championship. He was a close second in the 2001 Heisman Trophy race, one of the closest in history, just behind Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch (770-708). In three years at Florida, Grossman threw for 9,164 yards and 77 touchdowns while compiling a 145.77 passer rating. That was impressive enough that the Chicago Bears took him in the first round of the 2003 draft. He was selected No. 22 overall, behind three other quarterbacks — USC’s Carson Palmer (1st), Marshall’s Byron Leftwich (7th), and Cal’s Kyle Boller (19th). But Grossman never took command of the starting job in Chicago, not even in 2006 when he became the first quarterback to start all 16 games for the Bears since Erik Kramer did it in 1995. Even as the 2006 team rode a great defense to the Super Bowl, Grossman threw 20 interceptions to go with his 23 touchdowns and fans were calling for Brian Griese to play.
2013 NFL season preview: Washington Redskins
Although one would usually assume that a starter should not be risking further injury in a preseason game, the Bills having a new quarterback and new offensive scheme makes it imperative that Johnson be on the field as much as possible. Only time will tell whether Kolb and Johnson can develop chemistry, and the game on Saturday will be the first real test. If nothing else, superior route-runner Johnson seems like the perfect fit for Doug Marrone’s quick-strike passing game, and it should be fun to watch him run wild in it. A related question going forward is whether Johnson can get and consistently stay healthy during the regular season. It has seemed like he has been a permanent fixture in “questionable” status since emerging as the Bills’ best receiver. Perhaps a strong performance against the Redskins would go a long way in catapulting Johnson into the regular season with momentum for Week 1 against the New England Patriots. What Kind of Test Will the Bills’ Defense Get? The Bills’ defense Ryan Kerrigan Away Jersey is also working to get comfortable in a new system, as new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has installed a pressure-heavy scheme. In limited action, the first-team defense has impressed, handcuffing both the Indianapolis Colts and Minnesota Vikings. The defensive starters getting a final tuneup against a first-team offense is important, however, in no small part because Tom Brady and the Patriots are on tap to start the regular season.
Redskins’ Fletcher: hits cause him to ‘see stars’
But Rambo is breaking down too much and his angles are off enough that the combination has equaled trouble for him. Rambo isnt the only one who has struggled with angles, but he is the rookie starting at a spot where he needs to be a sure tackler. During camp Rambo looked like he belonged, and that he was good at correcting his mental mistakes. But one of the areas thats tough to measure is how hell come up versus the run. With LeSean McCoy up in Week 1, the Redskins cant afford a free safety still learning how to master the proper angles. I like that Rambo forced a fumble after one of his misses (a play in which Rob Jackson blew up the tight end and forced the back into a tough spot).

“It’s just every now and then I would maybe have a little sway. I would notice it. Nobody else would notice it. So I never told the team about that.” It wasn’t until he had a hamstring injury in October that Fletcher told the team about his “balance” issues. It turned out to be problem in his neck that was resolved easily. Fletcher hadn’t been his usual self up until then, and once the problem was treated he had a strong second half and was named second-team All-Pro. “I think players sometimes go running to the training room too much,” Fletcher said. “You get a hangnail, you go run to the Robert Griffin III Jersey trainer. You get a sprained finger, you go running to the trainer, things like that. For me, I’m just of the mentality, if you can go out and play, you don’t need to run to the training room about every little thing that’s going on.
Washington Redskins NT Barry Cofield Optimistic for Return by Week 1
There are going to be injuries in the NFL , no one can doubt that. Fans can just hope that they are not serious. In the case of Redskins starting nose tackle Barry Cofield, it is a pleasure to report that his injury is not serious. Reported as a fractured hand, Cofield expects, baring no further setbacks, to return by Week 1. The goal is to be back for Week 1, said Cofield. I feel optimistic that thats the caseTeammates have a high expectation of me. They count on me to perform and to lead. So thats my goal and I feel confident. To see how lucky the Redskins are to dodge this bullet, Cofields NFL statistics need to be examined. In his seven years in the NFL, five with the New York Giants and two with the Redskins, Cofield has started in all but two games. He has registered 271 tackles, 184 solo tackles, 16 sacks, 25 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His stats are not amazing beyond belief, but Cofield is as consistent and talented as they come. Until Cofield can play, backup Chris Neild will start in his place . Neild, who missed all of last season and just returned from recovery, has fans worried about his own health. Cofield,is confident in Neild and in his own ability to return by Week 1. Chris just bounced back from his knee injury better than we could have hoped for, Cofield said. Weve got a lot of depthso far, I think weve been pretty solid. The Cofield injury will be nothing to worry about, unless youre one of those people who think the preseason counts. Be ready to watch Cofield continue his dominance in this regular season.
