Brian Orakpo’s return could transform Redskins’ defense

Redskins’ Alfred Morris appears ready for more in his second season

Its an appropriate look. Orakpo is a baaadd man this summer. He is fully recovered from the torn left pectoral muscle that cost him all of last season. In returning to a defense that badly missed him last year, he is consumed by the challenge of playing better than he ever has a goal that, if achieved, would earn him millions as a free agent next offseason. The first day I stepped out on the field, I did not want to lose a step, Orakpo said after a recent practice. I did not want to get my feet wet. I just wanted to pick up where I left off, and I feel like I have been doing so. To understand what Orakpo s return means to the Redskins, go back to Sept. 17 in St.

Redskins Training Camp Attendance Surpasses 100,000

In a season, Morris went from being a long shot to make the opening 53-man roster out of camp to setting the Redskins single-season rushing record with 1,613 yards. Dont be surprised if his second act is even better. Morris possesses intangibles smarts, vision, patience, determination that separate the NFLs best backs from the average ones. Its true he benefitted from playing alongside quarterback Robert Griffin III in Washingtons option-based offense. Racking up yards is easier when youre not the defenses primary concern. But for anyone who think Morriss big numbers mostly were a product of Griffins ability and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahans play-calling, theres something you need to know: Youre wrong. Morris deserves the majority of credit for his success . Without Morriss contribution, the Redskins wouldnt have had the NFLs most balanced offense last season. Listening to Coach Mike Shanahan praise Morris , you get the sense the second-year player wont be a one-hit wonder. From the start of last years training camp, Morris impressed veterans with his hard-charging running style.

Washington Redskins 4th-String QB Pat White May Need Versatility to Enhance His Value

Washington hitter, its clear that they havent spent much time at Nationals Park. None of the responses were as shockingly inexplicable as the one from second-year running back Alfred Morris. Charles Krupa/AP This is Tom Brady, in case Alfred Morris is wondering. Is that Tom Brady? he asked after being shown a picture of Harper. Morris, who was drafted in the 6th round out of Florida Atlantic, had a fantastic rookie year rushing for 1,613 yards and 13 touchdowns. His effort in guessing who Harper was, however, less than stellar. Another head-scratching answer came from Redskins cornerback Richard Crawford when he mistook Harper for a teammate. Nick Wass/AP Is that Tom Brady? asks Redskins RB Alfred Morris, here losing his helmet, when shown a picture of Harper. “Oh, dude, that looks like Ricky Elmore, number 51 our linebacker he said. Wide receiver Aldrick Robinson also ID’d Harper as a Redskins teammate, Logan Paulsen.

Redskins fans were euphoric. It was likely the greatest standing ovation in the history of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As always, Monk was humble during his speech : Being included into this fraternity is a pretty humbling experience for me, said Monk.

It was a good week of practice for both Shanahan and Griffin. The team’s plan for easing Griffin back into the lineup from knee surgery extends through Tuesday. With Thursday night’s preseason game at Tennessee looming, Griffin will be re-evaluated during the three-day break prior to the game. “The only reason you [wouldn’t] keep on going forward with the game plan that you have because you have a game plan for the first game [is if] after swelling, there was setback, he doesn’t feel comfortable,” Shanahan said. “The key for us is not to push him too quick. You dont know how he’s going to react in different drills. But right now, there has been no swelling. He feels very good and thats one of the reasons he hasn’t had a day off.” Cousins also has had ample opportunity to work with the first team.

View/Submit Comments for this story Since returning to Virginia, Tapp said he has been able to reconnect with his friends and family in the area who have made the trip up to Richmond. Its an awesome feeling to be in an area where people support you, he said. For me, some of them have seen me grow up from high school, through college, and now playing at the highest level. Its an honor and a pleasure to play here. Tapp grew up a die-hard Redskins fan, and said that it was a dream come true to be able to play for his favorite team. He said that he was amazed by the turnout at each of the Redskins practices, despite the hot weather. Ive always been a Redskins fan, but you get a new appreciation when youre playing for the team and the fans are out here in the thousands supporting you in every practice, Tapp said. Even though its starting to get blazing out here, theyre out here in full force. This training camp, though, has been different for Tapp than his previous seven. Not only has he switched cities, teams and uniforms, he also is making the move from defensive end to outside linebacker as a part of defensive coordinator Jim Hasletts 3-4 scheme. Playing primarily defensive end in his first seven seasons, Tapp recorded 257 tackles, 24 sacks, nine forced fumbles, and two interceptions in 103 career games. He said that he has remained positive throughout and that he has welcomed the transition, doing everything he can to make it as smooth as possible.

If Griffin is less than 100 percent, reserve quarterback Kirk Cousins is capable of leading the Redskins offense if necessary.Veteran Rex Grossman, who may also be fighting for a roster sport, is in the mix as well. That reduces the number of significant snaps White will receive at quarterback. To his credit, White maintains that hell help the Redskins in any capacity, even if he has to change position. The question is, where would White prove the most valuable other than quarterback? Running back could be an option. He rushed for almost 4,500 yards during his four-year collegiate career at West Virginia University .However, running back is another position where Washington enjoys stability, with Alfred Morris, Roy Helu Jr.
