Well just keep going like that. That means, according to Griffin , hell continue to ramp up with more reps in the morning walkthrough each day. After that its just about him putting me into the team reps, trusting me in there, that Ill be smart, and them trusting that I can make the moves to avoid guys, Griffin said. I feel like I can, but once again Ive got to defer to coach and let him make that decision. Its a balancing act for all parties, but more so for those charged with saving Griffin from himself. Griffin indicated there is a formal timeline of sorts for the early weeks of camp, but it gets pretty vague after this week, leaving plenty of flexibility based on how Griffin s surgically repaired knee reacts to increased football activity. His next big milestone will be participation in team drills, which remains a couple of weeks off based on what Shanahan said last week. But Griffin already is looking in that direction.
Robert Griffin III gets up
(Carolyn Kaster / Associated Press / June 12, 2013) By Sam Farmer July 22, 2013, 9:56 a.m. Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III tweeted Monday that doctors have cleared him to practice and he will be ready to go for the start of Redskins training camp. Griffin is six months removed from major knee surgery to repair ligament tears he suffered in Washington’s playoff loss to Seattle. He sustained torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee. Doctors cleared me to practice. Coach is going to ease me in. Thank you for your support & See you in Richmond

That call will be made after the season based on his experience with the brace in 2013. “I don’t know if I’ll wear it forever. I know I’ll wear it for the rest of the season,” he said. He said the knee brace isn’t a hindrance. “You get used to it, your leg gets stronger and you can carry that extra weight,” he said.

His recovery seems to be mirroring that of 2012 league MVP Adrian Petterson’s seemingly superhuman comeback from a torn ACL suffered Dec. 24, 2011. Peterson was held back during the first two weeks of Minnesota Vikings training camp last summer and listed on the team’s physically unable to perform list, which prevents a player from participating in any team drills with teammates. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan told USA TODAY Sports in June that Griffin would be back on the field only after doctors cleared him and Shanahan was convinced his knee was full go. Now RG3 seems well on his way to reaching his ultimate goal starting in the Redskins’ Sept. 9 season opener on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles. *** Follow Jim Corbett on Twitter @ByJimCorbett PHOTOS: Pivotal players to watch in the NFC USA TODAY Sports already revealed its list of 2013’s pivotal players in the AFC. And after that, its kind of just wait and see. Shanahan has limited Griffin to individual drills, including seven-on-seven passing drills, in the early stages of camp, withholding Griffin from full team drills. Griffin said he understands Shanahans approach but is eager to move on to the next step in his return. I think there is a timeline, Griffin said. There will be about another week of what weve been doing and then after that week, then its probably a little more see what happens because theyre going to eventually put me back in those team reps, give me more reps in practice. Thats what I really look forward to. Im using this last week to continue to take those mental reps and do that kind of thing.

In a corner, the tight end Logan Paulsen was shocked and slumped at his locker. “I just wanted to get over to him and make sure he didn’t try to stand up,” he said when asked why he rushed to Griffin’s side after that last knee-buckle. “Because he always tries to do that.” And then Griffin came out, still in his pads, and sat at his locker for a long time. Later, he’d follow Mike Shanahan — clipped, Air Force-y diction from a tight orange face — and London Fletcher at the podium in the media room. Griffin was almost certainly either in agonizing pain or aloft on an opioid cloud, but he handled questions with grace.

“I call it `Operation Patience.’ Griffin said he has “no pain” and “no swelling” in his right knee. He says he can plant on the leg the way he did before he first injured it last season. He said he’s always forgetting to put on his brace, which he is supposed to wear during practices and games all season. “I don’t really worry about my leg anymore,” he said. “I just play football.” To that end, Griffin feels he’s ready to do more than he is allowed. During the portions of practice devoted to special teams, he goes to a separate field and runs through a scaled-down version of the plays he missed during the 11-on-11s. He said he did get a “little bump-up” in work during Monday morning’s walkthrough, but he won’t join the 11-on-11 drills in the main practice until next week at the earliest. “I feel like I’m ready for that – but we’re being real cautious right now and taking it slow,” Griffin said.

I don’t know if I’ll wear it forever,” he said. “I know I’ll wear it the rest of the season. After the first time I had the injury, I wore it for a year and I thought I’d wear it the rest of my life. The next year came around, and I took it off, and we won a Heisman and did a whole lot of other things. It just depends on how the leg feels. I don’t plan on wearing it past this season, but that all depends on what happens.
