Port Townsend begins the search for a new mascot
“Inuits don’t call themselves ‘Indian,'” said Eningowuk. Eningowuk said she watched Dodson’s performance online and laughed at some of his references to native culture. “I heard him say that [he and his family] go to pow wows? Thats not Aleut or inuit,” she said. “And he talks about living on a reservation of some sort. There are no Inuit or Aleut reservations in Alaska.” What of Dodson’s contention that Aleuts and/or Inuits regularly use “redskin” as a term of endearment? “I have never called anybody ‘redskin,'” Eningowuk said. “Nobody I know has ever called me ‘redskin.’ I have never heard any Inuit call somebody ‘redskin.'” But Dodson isn’t ready to surrender any titles just yet.
The school board voted to eliminate the mascot. Now students and community will be part of the process to find a new one. We don’t have a problem with it at all — in fact we’re honored. We’re quite honored.” “It’s actually a term of endearment that we would refer to each other as,” Dodson said. “When we were on the reservation, we’d call each other, ‘Hey, what’s up, redskin?’ We’d nickname it and call each other ‘Skins.’ We respected each other with that term.” But recent reports show that Dodson, whose real name is Stephen D. Dodson, is not really a chief. In fact, only person that calls Dodson “Chief” is Dodson himself, and anybody that reads “Chief Dodson” embroidered on the chest of his Charley’s Crane Service shirt. In a recent Washington Post poll , a majority of Washington area residents have said the team should keep its name.
Native American author calls Goodell “cowardly” on Redskins issue
I feel sorry for the Washington Redskin fan base and Im a die hard Philadelphia Eagles fan. I would be heart broken if the Eagles name had to be changed because the bald Eagle was on the brink of extinction and society thought it best if we changed the name to the team so people wouldnt think about them anymore to hunt or something. I know it sounds stupid but this is what this whole situation sounds to me. Congrats 15 minutes of fame people, you officially are dumb strokeytheclown says: Jul 5, 2013 10:39 AM Here we go again! With the recent emergence of superstar rookies QB Robert Griffin III and RB Alfred Morris, Redskins fans are now able to place faith in their players. These players, along with TE Fred Davis and OLB Brian Orakpo, are and always have been Redskins. The days of placing faith in washed-up legends like Jason Taylor, Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb are over. The Redskins are now building from the bottom and the future is very bright. Many claim that this recent success is solely attributed to the continuing legend of current Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. However, keep climbing the ladder because Snyder also deserves some praise. After all, Snyder did hire Shanahan in 2010.Rumors have also circulated that it was Snyder who ultimately picked Griffin, with Shanahan content to give current backup QB Kirk Cousins a shot. Before Shanahan, six previous head coaches were hired and fired by Snyder, with the Redskins losing 55 percent of their games and only reaching the playoffs three times in 12 years. This compiled with Snyder suing newspaper writers for slander, raising ticket prices, banning signs in FedEx Field and taking defaulting season-ticket holders to court had Redskins fans on the verge of rebellion. Now, the defending NFC East Champions with the 2012 Rookie of the Year award winner, Griffin, have a dedicated fan base ready to follow their team to the Super Bowl. Snyder has also greatly promoted the Redskins Franchise and helped the local community through various charitable foundations. His business savvy has made the Redskins the second most profitable NFL franchise, worth over $1.6 Billion, and with Griffin jerseys breaking record sales, the franchise can only go up.
